DragonBall Collector's Edition Hardcover Manga.

So today I picked up the DragonBall and DragonBall Z Collectors Edition Manga. Eh, its ... alright. I think I was expecting it to be really awesome but... I don't know. It wasn't anything special.

Here they are spread eagel...

The first thing I noticed was the size, I was expecting it to be like the Shonen Jump Collectors Edition. It was actually much much smaller, just a little bigger then the regular editions. Speaking of the original releases, the original cover art is under the book jacket. So, if you were worried about the cover art sucking ass then you can just take the jacket off I suppose.

Next thing is censorship... Now, this is kind of a wired thing with these books. The DragonBall one is censored but the DragonBall Z one is not. The reason for that is in the first volume of DB, there was some editing (Bulma's boobs...) but in the first volume of DBZ there was really nothing to censor so, it was just a fluke. Unless Iam wrong... If someone here knows of any cencorship in the first volume of DBZ then just let me know. I'll compare.

Oh and by the way, this is a one shot deal. They aren't releasing the whole series like this. I was talking to Kaboom about this before. He said VIZ released some other manga like this, just one shot first volume deals so... Confused

Bottom Line: If you were looking for a definitive version of the DragonBall manga in English, this isn't it. While still good for collectors to pretty up there shelf's (which it actually encourages you to do in the jacket flap). I wouldn't waste my money on this if you already have volume 1 of these books.

DragonBall: The Movies (DragonBox) Single DVD 1 & 2.

So for no real reason at all I decided to pre-order the first two "DragonBall: The Movies" DVD's. Today, when I got home from work I found them sitting in my hallway. I haven't done a dissection like this in a while. I really scanned the shit outta these DVD's. Anyways we will get right into it...

First thing you will notice is the cover art for the first movie is not the usuall one we've been seeing. But no worries, that thing is just a card you can remove showing the real cover underneith. Its pretty cool card though, its one of those things you move around to see different images.

Also the covers seem to have a splash of glitter on them. Its kind of a nice touch.

These DVD's come with a little movie poster card... Well I guess its not really the movie poster, I suppose its more like promotional art from that movie...

The covers unfolded...

When you turn those over it has somthing called a "Character Album". Pretty cool. FUNimation are you taking notes? Bah it's way to late for that now anyways.

The backs...

And no, the side bars do not form a picture.

It seems this menu screen might be on every disc. It was on disc 1 and 2 so...

These disc have the original trailers
(not shown in the movie below) and also some new ones made to promote these single discs. It also has some promo's for other DragonBall (series) single disc....

DragonBall: Ultimate Edition (Live Action Hong Kong Movie) DVD.

"DragonBall: The Ultimate Edition" DVD. What makes it ultimate? How about an all new CGI Goku? What? Yea, you'll find out at the end of this article what the frig Iam talking about. But for now lets start at the begining (or you can scroll down now to see CGI Goku and be all like OMGWTF). Here is the back of the case, it looks like a real low budget job... Did they need to list color as one of the features? Maybe they should have also told us it was a talkie to. Also its region free so... yeeeea.

The main menu is pretty much just the art they used for the cover, just re arranged and touched up a bit...

So now for the "All new special effects"... The original opening had the sock puppet Dragon appearing in the sky. For this re-release though, the producers decided to just make a CGI dragon using nothing but software from 1995

I honestly think sock puppet dragon looked more life like. I don't know it's pretty funny seeing it in action. Anyway, I had a OMGWTF moment when I saw this:

Motha flippin DragonBalls! Not just some stupid white pearl thats used in the movie. These are DragonBalls! Look at them you can't deny that! They only were on screen for like a half a second then faded into the movie's title screen:

They just touched up a few things and added some CGI effects here and there... A few examples are:

King Horn now has lightning around his body and glowing red eyes... sometimes:

Goku's cloud is more cloud like:

The fireball or ki shots are more like the anime series. Before they were just fireworks on the floor that would lead up to the target and the guy would throw himself backwards as if he was hit with a fireball. This was common in the early Mighty Morphing Power Rangers so you know what Iam talking about. Now, it looks pretty cool. I'd say this is probley the only thing I would say they did a pretty good job on...

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b90/tanookikuribo/vlcsnap-50441.png

So of course at the end, the Dragon is summoned and of course its that same Dragon that was seen in the credits...
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b90/tanookikuribo/vlcsnap-51269.png

Ok so the Dragon comes, Bulma gets her wish. In the original version Yamcha looks at Goku and says "I have a wish" and Goku is like "What is it?" Yamcha says he wishes he could fight Goku and Goku says "You got your wish" and they start a friendly fight. What happens in this version though is after Goku says "You got your wish"... uh... this happens:

Wow... Wow. CGI Goku and Yamcha start fighting as the credits roll up. What the Hell? That was totally bizarre!

So friggin wired. I don't know why they would do that... Oh well, you can put a bunch of butter on shit but its still going to taste like shit

DragonBall (R2) Single Disc DVD 1.

I know a lot of people here probley won't be getting the DragonBall single disc, but as fans your probley just a little curious as to what the DVD contains. Well, here is a little dissection of DragonBall DVD 1... First thing you'll notice is that the cover is a tad different then whats shown on most Internet sites...

This is because the DVD case is in a plastic slip case. When its taken out of the plastic case its the same image you seen everywhere else. This is the back of the DVD case with the plastic case on...

... and this is the back without the plastic case...

Looks exactly like the layout they used for the back of the DBZ discs. This is the booklet (insert?) that folds out. They used this same idea with the DBZ DVD's also...

This DVD came with some advertising slips which include the Dr.Slump DVD box set, The DBZ Single Discs, Harukanaru Gokû Densetsu, and a Goku trading card that advertises for Jump World. All those had some pretty nice art but look at this...

Yuppers, thats mother flippin Gohan and Trunks from the alternate future with new school art style. This slip was an ad for Shin Budokai 2 for PSP. I hope thats going to be the cover art... The main menu...

Next is just a random shot from the DVD...

Bardock: Father Of Goku (2009 Single Disc)

This release just happed to fall into my lap (shifty eyes), I wasn't really planning on getting this, even though I currently don't have the Bardock TV special on DVD... So here we have this release that really doesn't make any sence being they just released this TV Special bundled with the other DBZ TV special. That was a pretty nice release, two TV specials for the price of one? Why would they just turn around and release a single version? Oh well, shortest dissection ever...

I gotta admit, as bland as the cover looks, the white background looks pretty cool on the back. I guess it's because more space is filled....?

For some odd reason, they decided to put the dragon behind the CD tray. Not Freeza, not Bardock... I would even take Goku, but the dragon? There is no mention of the dragonballs or a dragon in the TV special. Whatever...
