DragonBall: Ultimate Edition (Live Action Hong Kong Movie) DVD.

"DragonBall: The Ultimate Edition" DVD. What makes it ultimate? How about an all new CGI Goku? What? Yea, you'll find out at the end of this article what the frig Iam talking about. But for now lets start at the begining (or you can scroll down now to see CGI Goku and be all like OMGWTF). Here is the back of the case, it looks like a real low budget job... Did they need to list color as one of the features? Maybe they should have also told us it was a talkie to. Also its region free so... yeeeea.

The main menu is pretty much just the art they used for the cover, just re arranged and touched up a bit...

So now for the "All new special effects"... The original opening had the sock puppet Dragon appearing in the sky. For this re-release though, the producers decided to just make a CGI dragon using nothing but software from 1995

I honestly think sock puppet dragon looked more life like. I don't know it's pretty funny seeing it in action. Anyway, I had a OMGWTF moment when I saw this:

Motha flippin DragonBalls! Not just some stupid white pearl thats used in the movie. These are DragonBalls! Look at them you can't deny that! They only were on screen for like a half a second then faded into the movie's title screen:

They just touched up a few things and added some CGI effects here and there... A few examples are:

King Horn now has lightning around his body and glowing red eyes... sometimes:

Goku's cloud is more cloud like:

The fireball or ki shots are more like the anime series. Before they were just fireworks on the floor that would lead up to the target and the guy would throw himself backwards as if he was hit with a fireball. This was common in the early Mighty Morphing Power Rangers so you know what Iam talking about. Now, it looks pretty cool. I'd say this is probley the only thing I would say they did a pretty good job on...

So of course at the end, the Dragon is summoned and of course its that same Dragon that was seen in the credits...

Ok so the Dragon comes, Bulma gets her wish. In the original version Yamcha looks at Goku and says "I have a wish" and Goku is like "What is it?" Yamcha says he wishes he could fight Goku and Goku says "You got your wish" and they start a friendly fight. What happens in this version though is after Goku says "You got your wish"... uh... this happens:

Wow... Wow. CGI Goku and Yamcha start fighting as the credits roll up. What the Hell? That was totally bizarre!

So friggin wired. I don't know why they would do that... Oh well, you can put a bunch of butter on shit but its still going to taste like shit
